Like most of Suzanne Wright's fans, I was salivating at the mouth for the "Nick & Shay" story. Now that it's finally here, I had to stop in the middle of reading to express my thoughts. On the plus side, the author stuck to her formula of witty banter that made me laugh out loud. She kept with up with a great storyline as well with the humans and the shifters. Now, however, I have to express what I dislike about the story so far:

Let's start somewhere simple, Shaya. I really wasn't a big fan of Shaya in this book. In her two previous Phoenix Pack stories, Shay's personality was awesome. Even though she wasn't an alpha female (which Wright is VERY talented in creating strong female characters), you could tell that Shaya was still a subtle strong woman. Sweet and very caring. Goes out of her way for her friends. Yet, in this book.. she's kind of a bitch. I think there were times when Wright strayed from the character we came to really like. I was so disappointed how her character was practically wishy washy. Dominant, submissive, dominant, submissive. She really was one extreme to the other. When, in my mind, I viewed her as a perfect combination of both. I'm not going to lie. The scene when Nick & Shaya first meet up was a favorite. She was written as nothing less than extraordinary and then she just became unlikable.

Continuing, there were times throughout the book, it almost seemed as if things were out of place. (SPOILER) The first time Nick and Shaya have sex and it's supposed to be one of those "intense" moments between them where his line is "Only I can make you feel this way, Shay. Only me, only your mate." And as the reader you, of course, sigh and are in a dreamy state. She actually returns with the line, "That works both ways, Beavis." Really?!?! I mean, I get pet names and am a huge fan of them but that particular "pet name" is used previously when she's insulting him. WRONG WRONG WRONG moment to use it. (Of course still my opinion) Just saying that the scene lost something major.

Also, I think a few readers can agree that when it comes to sex scenes in her writing, Suzanne Wright knows her way around an orgasm or two. Yet, with this pair, the chemistry seems rushed. The love scenes almost miss that hot, for lack of a better phrase "grrr I want to rip your clothes off and take you" feeling. This could have a great deal to do with the fact that, again, in previous books you're left with a certain idea of how Nick's character is and how he's set up, yet in this book he's sort of a bitch himself. Yes, I know he's trying to win her back and I know he's trying to earn her trust, but it's really difficult to keep in mind that he's an alpha male with all his ailments, and pushover ways. (BIG sigh)

Listen, I'm a HUGE fan of Suzanne Wright and I will continue to be. She's a frickin awesome writer. I just think that maybe the publishers/editors got a hold of our darling author and maybe pushed her in a direction this book wasn't meant to go. At least that's what I'm hoping. Like my Subject said, this is to be continued. I'm currently 60% into the book and I'm almost praying there are redeeming qualities. I'll be editing more later. Still love you Suzanne!!!! xoxo

I know it's been a while since I've finished the book, however, I finally know how I wanted to finish this review. Sometimes you'll put something on a pedestal, usually a person however in some cases it CAN be a book. I believe that's what happened here. I really thought this book was going to be a WOWSA and was sorely let down. It wasn't a bad book, it was just not the book for me. (tear face) But!! I can say with absolute certainty that I will not let it deter me from being a fan of Ms. Wright's and I will continue to be amazed and read/reread her work. Cause, yeah, she's frickin awesome. Thanks for taking my OPINION into consideration. :-)

This is Book 3 in the Phoenix Pack shifter series, but if you haven't read the previous two, you should be fine. The same characters make appearances throughout, but aren't central to story. Following on from the storyline from Book 2, Shaya has left Phoenix territory to escape Nick, her mate, who won't claim her but won't let her move on with her own life. She ends up in a town where anti-shifter extremists have set up camp and the local pack is rumoured to be associated with drugs and several shifters going missing. She's working with a former school friend as a hairdresser, but is pretty much lonely and missing her pack. She is able to fly under the radar as she is only half shifter, but Nick puts a spanner in the works with his alpha vibes. Nick, unable to let her go, spends 6 months tracking her down and parks his motorhome outside her place intent on winning her over. Shaya is reluctant and really angry and from here, drama ensues.

I liked the book for the most part. Nick was moody and dominant, but sweet and caring towards Shaya, making a nice change from the heavy alpha themes in other books. I also enjoyed the character of Shaya, although I found her supposedly submissive character out of whack with her feisty character that couldn't overpower anyone, but had fighting skills all over the place. I liked that the story jumped pretty much straight into Nick finding Shaya, so there wasn't any dragging here, but there was a bit of back and forth with Nick trying to win her over without telling her about his medical condition as he didn't want her to feel sorry for him. What I didn't overly enjoy was a couple of the story twists thrown in to create drama. There was a pack member who had the hots for Nick that featured strongly in the story, as well as Nick's brain degeneration that was the reason for him not claiming Shaya and hurting her feelings. Shaya had an uncaring mother and an ex that hurt her and made her distrustful to men which is why she couldn't immediately succumb to Nick. I thought these elements were somewhat cliche as they've been done before so I found them a bit vexing rather than adding to the story as they were a major, repeated theme. There was also a bit of the 'I want to hate him but he's so hot I can't say no' business. Meh. The extremist plot was good, but the main protagonist was a let down, but not enough so to make me dislike the book.

Greta wasn't as painful in this book as the former, although the standard back and forth was there with her. The usual suspects from the Phoenix pack make solid cameos, so it was good to read about them again, especially Taryn and Trey. Nick and Shaya end up forming their own pack, the Mercury Pack, so I'm going to guess this is where the offshoot series of the same name comes from.

Overall, it was a solid enough, although mostly predictable, read about Nick trying to win over Shaya while the both of them tried to overcome their own issues. I'll continue to read this series.
